We know choosing the right van can be an overwhelming part of the process. Don’t sweat it! Our helpful team of experts are here to guide you every step of the way.

The Mercedes-benz sprinter awd

It’s no secret, at Camplife Customs we choose the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter AWD for it’s overall performance and durability. The Sprinter is available in three wheelbases, each with their own advantages. (see the differences below).

WHICH WHEELBASE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Essentially, choosing the right wheelbase boils down to space vs. maneuverability. If you prioritize space and passenger capacity, the 170″/170″ EXT is likely a better choice. If you need something more agile for city driving and more rugged terrain, the 144″ might be right for you.

144" Wheelbase

170" Wheelbase

170" EXT Wheelbase

  • Interior Cargo Length: 14 feet
  • Interior Standing Height: 6′ 4″
  • Interior Cargo Length: 17 feet
  • Interior Standing Height: 6′ 4″
  • Interior Cargo Length: 19 feet
  • Interior Standing Height: 6′ 4″

Best for: Shorter, better for city driving and more rugged terrain, less space for gear and living. Good for solo travelers or couples.

Best for: Longer, more spacious for gear and living, can be harder to maneuver. Good for couples or small families, or singles who have a lot of gear.

Best for: Maximum space, comfortable for families, room for larger living areas, more beds, dedicated work zones. Good for families.

Important Considerations

Number of passengers: The 170″ can typically fit 2 more people than the shorter option.

Travel destinations: 144″ is easier for city driving  and tight spots you may encounter off-road, while 170″ offers more comfort for longer trips.

Activities: Both can be outfitted for outdoor activities, but the 170″ has more space to store your gear securely.

Gear storage: Camplife Customs can customize either size wheelbase for gear storage, but the 170″ inherently offers more space.

Turning Radius: The longer the wheelbase, the larger the turning radius, making it less agile in tight spaces.

Parking: 144″ fits in a standard parking space, while 170″ and 170″ EXT often require larger spaces.

Weight: Longer wheelbases and heavier builds can affect fuel efficiency and may have different driving regulations in some areas.
